I'd like to introduce you to Angela McGrath. She's a designer based out of Vancouver who is passionate about designing quality leather goods that are simple in form, and really come to life with her hand-painted patterns. Her travels are the inspiration for each collection, and new patterns are born with a visit to each new city (San Diego is one of my favorites!).
Her line, Epoché currently has a Kickstarter campaign going so that she can attend the West Coast Craft show here in San Francisco on June 13th & 14th. Let's get her funded - she should definitely be represented at the show! Plus, it can't hurt to get one of her beautiful bags out of it. Win-win.
Although we are in different countries and haven't had the chance to meet, I still got to ask Angela a few questions about what keeps her inspired:
What did you do today?
I started off my day by first checking up on my Kickstarter campaign and sending off a few e-mails, I then had breakfast while watching Parks and Rec (which I just started to watch). In the afternoon I went on a bike ride with my boyfriend along the seawall in Vancouver to a coffee shop, grabbed an Americano and did some work. Next I biked home, and grabbed a cheesecake for my mom’s birthday day dinner before heading off to my parents home in the suburbs to celebrate.
Do you believe in schedules and routines? If so, what is yours?
I really thrive off of having a sense of routine in my life as I find that it really makes me feel grounded. I love waking up early in the morning and watching the local newscast with the heater on my feet and an espresso in my hand. Making time to spend 30 minutes in the morning to just sit and relax centers me and prepares me for my day ahead.
Is there anything you would dare to call a favorite at the moment?
For the last few years bananas have been one of my favorite fruits and an absolute necessity for breakfast whether it be on toast with peanut butter, in cereal, or in a smoothie.
Are there any small parts of your day that affect you are on a larger scale (turn into passions even)?
Walking to and from the studio everyday has a huge affect on my day and my work, as it’s on these walks that I come up with a lot of ideas or I’ll see something that will spark a new color palette or pattern.
Inspiration - it’s a loaded word. But we’re going to make you answer anyways - could you share any sources of inspiration?
I am really inspired by traveling to new and immersive landscapes. The act of traveling to new places greatly influences my artistic sensibilities, and has dramatically shaped the way I view colour combinations and graphic elements. The patterns for the current collection are all inspired by some of the different places I have traveled to over the last 5 years.
And for fun - do you have any pets? We’re suckers for cute animals.
Yes I have a very cute cat that I adopted as a Kitten last summer! His name is Biscotti and he’s quite the character, he loves to try to eat anything with wheat in it and taught himself how to play fetch. This is one of my favorite photos of him, which was taken when he commandeered a photo-shoot
