A lot of people will ask as we travel what our favorite experiences have been. Every time without a doubt I say our Elephant trek in Mae Win, Mae Wang Thailand. Elephants are amazing animals. At the camp, I rode a mama elephant bareback while her baby walked ahead of us. The baby had me laughing the whole time - she barely knew how to use her legs yet so she'd trip over small rocks and then playfully roll around in the mud. When hills were to much for her to climb, her Mom would give her a nudge to get her up.
This baby elephant is four years old. She was adorable and just wanted to play in the water, give kisses, and eat treats.
We stayed at an Airbnb on an Elephant sanctuary. I couldn't more highly recommend it. In fact, I'd love to go back right now. The resort is made up of both hotel rooms and bungalows, and from every room you can see elephants strolling by all day. Early mornings and late afternoons are reserved for guests to ride the elephants barebacked. The groups are small, and the tour costs about 1300 baht, or $40. Not a bad deal for one of my favorite things I've ever done. The tour also included a trek through the rain forest to waterfalls, lunch, and a bamboo raft down the river.
At the end, I absolutely did not want to leave. Maybe you can go now, and I'll live vicariously!
